GAF Ridge Vent Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

GAF ridge vent installation in Dallas typically runs $14 to $22 per linear foot installed, so a standard 40-foot ridge lands between $560 and $880. We stock GAF-compatible ridge vent on the truck and can usually get the job done in a single visit. Most homeowners discover the problem two ways: they see cracked or warped plastic from the ground, or they notice the attic suddenly feels hotter than it should in July. In Dallas, where attic temps regularly push 140 degrees, a failed ridge vent isn’t just an efficiency issue, it’s the kind of thing that cooks your shingles from underneath and shortens the life of the roof decking.

Which GAF Models This Applies To

GAF makes two primary ridge vent lines that show up on Dallas roofs: Cobra Ridge Vent and Snow Country. Cobra is the common one here. It’s a rolled, shingle-over style vent made from a rigid plastic mesh core. Snow Country is the heavier-duty version with a solid external baffle, designed for high-wind and heavy-rain regions. North Texas gets both, so we see Snow Country spec’d fairly often in newer construction across neighborhoods like Lake Highlands and Coppell.

The part itself is not glued into the roofline, it’s mechanically attached with nails or screws and then shingled over. That means when it fails, it’s replaced as a section product, not a modular component. You won’t find a GAF part number stamped on the visible surface after installation because the shingles cover it. If you want to know what’s under there before we cut anything open, check the attic. The underside of the vent will usually show the GAF name or a product stamp on the plastic mesh. If it’s blank or crumbling, it was likely an aftermarket product.

One compatibility gotcha specific to GAF: Snow Country requires a wider ridge slot than Cobra. If a roofer cut a narrow slot for Cobra and someone tries to swap in Snow Country later without recutting, the airflow drops by roughly half. That’s the kind of mistake we catch because we measure the slot before we order anything.

We install both GAF lines plus quality equivalents from Owens Corning and CertainTeed when a homeowner wants a price comparison. Same installation standard either way. The write-up below is GAF-specific because that’s what most Dallas builders installed on homes from 2010 onward.

Signs Your GAF Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Cracked or curling vent edge visible along the ridge. UV exposure in Dallas breaks down the exposed plastic ends over time. Once the matrix cracks, water has a path into the ridge slot.
  • Attic temperature spike in summer. A properly vented Dallas attic runs 15 to 25 degrees above outdoor temp. If you’re seeing 40-plus degrees, the ridge vent is partially blocked or collapsed.
  • Water staining on the ceiling below the ridge line. This usually means the vent’s baffle has failed and driven rain is getting past it. Wind-driven rain in a spring storm finds every small gap.
  • Shingle tabs lifting at the ridge. When the vent material underneath degrades, the shingles on top lose their flat bedding surface. Lifted shingles catch wind and tear off.
  • Animal or insect activity in the attic near the peak. Squirrels chew through plastic ridge vent ends. We see this most often in older neighborhoods with mature tree cover, places like Richardson and Plano.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard asphalt shingle roof in Dallas, full GAF ridge vent replacement runs $14 to $22 per linear foot. A 30-foot ridge is $420 to $660. A 50-foot ridge is $700 to $1,100. The range comes down to ridge length, access difficulty, the vent product chosen, and whether we need to recut the ridge slot. If water has gotten in, there may also be decking repair at $4 to $6 per square foot, but we tell you that before we start, not after.

Every quote is written. You get the vent product named, the linear footage measured, the labor separate from the material, and the final number on paper before any work starts. The price we hand you does not move at the door. The work carries the Garrison Standard: background-checked, uniformed technicians, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the installation fails within one full year, we come back and fix it free. In writing.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check two things from the ground: look for cracked or sagging vent visible under the ridge shingles, and note whether your attic feels unreasonably hot on a 95-degree Dallas afternoon. That’s diagnostic. That’s fine to do yourself.

What we don’t advise is walking a ridge line to replace this part. You’re working at the highest, steepest point of the roof with a nail gun, a knife, and shingle adhesive. A fall from the ridge is the most common serious roofing injury, and the vent’s plastic mesh gets slick with morning dew. This is not a patio repair. If you want the job done right and everyone goes home at the end of the day, call (903) 499-4441 and ask for a written estimate.
