Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Owens Corning-compatible ridge vent here in Dallas, and a full ridge vent replacement on a typical single-family home runs $550 to $1,100 installed, parts and labor included. Most jobs are done in one visit, usually four to six hours. Homeowners usually find out the ridge vent failed the hard way: a hot upstairs in August, a water stain near the ceiling’s peak, or granules from the existing cap shingles collecting in the gutter after a spring hailstorm.

What we’re replacing is the vent system that runs along the highest horizontal line of your roof, the ridge. The Owens Corning-style vent is a rigid or flexible plastic mat that creates a continuous air channel while keeping rain and snow from blowing in. It’s covered by cap shingles that nail over it. When it works, it’s silent. When it fails, the attic stops breathing and the problems start stacking up: trapped heat, moisture, higher cooling bills, and shingle damage from the underside.

Which Owens Corning Models This Applies To

The two Owens Corning ridge vent lines we match most often in Dallas are the VentSure and the newer ProEdge models. VentSure comes in both a rigid 4-foot and a flexible roll format, and it’s designed to sit on the ridge with a baffle pattern on both sides. ProEdge is a lower-profile rigid product with a woven fabric exterior that blocks weather while letting air move. Both install under cap shingles, which means the cap shingle has to come off before the vent can be inspected or replaced.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners miss: the vent itself rarely fails. What fails first is the cap shingle adhesive and the nails holding it down. After a few North Texas summers, the sealant on cap shingles bakes out and wind-driven rain gets under the edge. If the ridge vent underneath is still intact, the fix can be as simple as new cap shingles over the existing vent. If the vent channel itself is crushed, split, or clogged with blown-in insulation, you’re replacing the vent mat along with the caps.

We’re an independent roofing company, not an Owens Corning dealer or affiliate, so we’re free to tell you straight when the OEM vent can stay and when an aftermarket equivalent does the same job for less. Most of the time, the aftermarket rigid vent from a line like GAF or CertainTeed installs cleanly over Owens Corning-compatible ridge geometry, but if your heart’s set on matched Owens Corning product, we quote it that way. The decision belongs on paper before any work starts.

Signs Your Owens Corning Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing

  • Upstairs rooms run 8 to 12 degrees hotter than downstairs in summer. That’s trapped attic heat. The ridge vent is supposed to let superheated air out at the peak. When it’s blocked or collapsed, the heat stays and radiates down through the ceiling.
  • Water staining near the ceiling’s peak or along the top of closet walls. On the long, low-slope roofs common in Dallas suburbs, wind-driven rain can get past a failed cap shingle at the ridge. The stain usually appears after a strong north wind, not a gentle shower.
  • You find granules from cap shingles in your gutters. Cap shingles take the worst UV exposure of any shingle on the roof. Once the granular surface wears off, the cap gets brittle and starts failing at every nail line.
  • Visible cracks, crush marks, or sagging in the ridge line from the ground or a ladder. Tree-limb impact and hail are the usual causes. A crushed vent section stops air movement at exactly the point where the attic needs it most.
  • Rust staining around roofing nails at the ridge. This means the fasteners have been pulling and flexing for years. The gap around each nail is a water entry point, and by the time you see rust, the decking beneath is already taking moisture.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-family home in Dallas, a full ridge vent replacement runs $550 to $1,100 installed. That range covers removing the old cap shingles and vent material, inspecting the ridge decking, installing the new vent channel, and nailing down fresh cap shingles with matching sealant. The price moves based on three things: linear feet of ridge, roof pitch and walkability, and whether the existing cap shingles are brittle enough that removal takes extra labor.

Every quote follows The Garrison Standard: the price goes on paper before any work starts, and it doesn’t change at the door. That number includes the parts, the labor, the cleanup, and the disposal. If we find rotted decking at the ridge once the cap is off, we’ll show you before touching it, and the repair gets priced in writing before we proceed. No change orders that appear after the contract is signed.

We back every ridge vent job with the 365-Day Done Right Promise: in writing, for one full year. If the vent fails within that period, we come back at no charge and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things yourself. From the attic side, on a sunny day, look for daylight at the ridge channel. From the ground, look for missing or lifted cap shingles after a storm. That’s where DIY should stop. This is roof work at the highest point of the house, and it involves working on a slope while pulling nails under tension. One wrong step on a steep pitch, and the fall doesn’t care how handy you are.

The bigger risk is the one you can’t see until it’s too late: a bad ridge vent install leaks slowly for months before the stain shows. By then you’re fixing decking, insulation, and maybe drywall. Travis Oakley has been on enough Dallas roofs to know that a ridge vent either breathes or it doesn’t, and the gap between those two things costs more than the install. If you want it checked, call (903) 499-4441 and we’ll put eyes on it.
